If you find that your cartridges are not going deep enough into the ground, you may find it useful to soak the ground first to soften the surface, and, add weight to the grassbox i.e sandbag. -

It sounds like the main drive couplings have disengaged under the transmission cover. Remove the drive cover and slide couplings into the mesh and tighten grubscrews. A small amount of locktite on the grubscrew can help to prevent this. -
